Every so often the rumour goes around: SEO is last year’s thing. Google have changed all the rules and algorithms. It’s expensive and time-consuming.
Let’s scotch that once and for all: SEO is not dead. SEO need not cost you a fortune. There are things you can do yourself, for free:
- Google AdWords Keyword Tool and Google AdWords Express are good tools for researching the keywords you want to rank highly in search engines, especially local searches.
- Then judiciously use those keywords in your content, with a big ‘However’: do not cram your content with the same keyword over and over again in a web page, (a) because it will turn your target customers right off and (b) Google’s algorithms can spot that from outer space and you will get into big trouble with them. Which is not advisable.
- Go for getting links to your website on relevant, high-ranking websites. This can be a bit of a tedious process; some websites will say Yes, some No, and some you’ll never hear back from. It’s worth the effort. Links to your site give you credibility, as it tells search engines that your website is trusted by others. This in turn will lead to Google pushing you higher up the search rankings, meaning your site will show higher in a keyword search.
Making sure your site is mobile-friendly
We recently ran a Facebook ad campaign to encourage prospects to visit our website. When we analysed the results, the large majority had accessed our ad and our website via their mobile. We were, frankly, amazed. If this is mind-blowing news to you too, help is at hand.
Firstly, Google will check your ‘mobile-friendliness’ for you : https://search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly
Secondly, get your site up on your mobile phone. How good does it look?
Thirdly, you can also check the speed of loading. Mobile users are especially impatient and won’t wait for you. Check your speed here (some other interesting insights too from this site): https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/
We hope these tips are of some use to you. More to follow.
